There is no doubt about the fact that Google is the king of the search engine world. And no one can contest the fact that Chrome users can type a query into the omnibox (the address bar) and quickly get search results based on that query. The problem with the search experience is that it’s not visual enough – and that’s where the recently released Yahoo! Axis plug-in for Chrome comes in. Yahoo! prides itself with the fact that with Axis it re-thinked the search experience and that Axis provides a faster and better way to find data online. Axis takes the search experience to the next level by offering visual previews and real time results.

Installing Axis is the same as installing any other extension on Chrome. It is a simple process that will take little of your time. When the installation completes, you will presented with a Tutorial webpage that tells you the button to the right takes you to your next search results, that you can view your bookmarks from the ribbon button in the lower right, and that you can search, bookmark pages, and access your personalized home page from the buttons in the lower left.

While Axis is running, it shows up as a small, black search box in the bottom left hand corner. When you hover the mouse over said box, it expends the length of the browser, from left to right. When you click the search box, Axis expands upwards. By default you are presented with the day’s trending searches and with visual results for those searches. Type in anything you want and Axis will search for it and present you with visual results – it will do so as you type along.

Axis will take up the whole browser window only when you access the personalized homepage – you can do that by clicking the home button from the bottom left hand corner. By default, the homepage displays various Yahoo! sites in the Read Later and My Favorites panes. If you sign into your account, you will be able to add the webpages you want to My Favorites or Read Later. On what device can you read these webpages later? Why on your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch. You see, Axis is available as a standalone iOS app. The webpages you add to My Favorites or Read Later can be easily accessed on your tablet or smartphone.

Google fans could argue that Google’s searches are better than Yahoo!’s. There is no arguing though with the fact that the Axis visual experience is superior to what Google has to offer at this time.

If you want real time search results, visual previews, and the ability to bookmark webpages, then go get Yahoo! Axis for Chrome.

Pros

Axis is available as a standalone app for iOS and as a plug-in for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. During our tests Axis performed best on Chrome (and worst on IE). You are provided with visual previews for your search and with results as you type along. Sign into your Yahoo! account and you can bookmark webpages.

Cons

None that I could think about.
